Initial Research Into Film Trailers - George

Taken 2

There are several contributing factors that tell us this is a trailer. One of the first being the variety of shots included. It varies from shots of family members being reunited to shots of cars exploding. Due to the fact that these events have no chronology, we can come to the conclusion that it is a trailer as these are often constructed in a thematic, impressionistic way rather than a chronoplogical one. Instead, the shots are grouped to create different impressions. The variety of mise-en-scene eg locations and costume changes also indicates a trailer, which is something we need to replicate. The constant non-diegetic music used throughout also makes us aware that this is a trailer. A variety of lighting within each shot also display a difference in time and make it clear that there is a significant time difference and that it is a trailer.

Many factors also make us aware that this trailer follows a particular genre. In this case, the genre is action.  Mise-en-scène is the main contributor to this as cars exploding, people running and fast moving objects e.g. trains, make us realise that it is of the action genre. This also shows how the trailer for 'Taken 2' follows a narrative of action (action code). Editing can also contribute to this as fast cuts provide a sense of pace and action which in turn lets us that this trailer is of the action genre.

Ted

'Ted' begins as most trailers do, at a calm pace with a sense of establishing an equilibrium. This is evident as calm non-diegetic music is used in a Christmas time setting and we see a child cuddling up next to his teddy bear. This equilibrium suddenly changes as the music changes to a non-diegetic comedic piece. This is coupled with a shot of the once young child, all grown up, smoking and eating out of a cereal box. This sudden change from equilibrium makes it evident that this is a trailer, which clearly moves swiftly between narrative phases. Also as with the other trailer, a variety of shots make it clear that this is intended to be a trailer. This is useful as a reminder that trailers are not fast-paced and furious throughout but can open quite calmly.

As is evident from the trailer, the film 'Ted' is intended to be part of the comedy genre. One obvious reason that this is seen as a comedy is due to the fact that there is the placement of a talking teddy bear. Also the comedic movements of the characters e.g. in the checkout area of the supermarket, and the comedic use of diegetic sound make it clear that this is a comedy. It is also full of adult humour to make sure the audience understand the target market despite the childish main character. The reference to Family Guy helps position the market too as the audience will associate this with subversive comedy.

Sinister

One of the most key contributing factors that let us know this is a trailer is the constant variation between equilibrium and disruption. The trailer begins with the once diegetic but now non-diegetic sound of a news reporter stating that there was a mass murder/suicide. This dramatic scene then switches to a calmer scene where there is a family moving into a new house. They seem to be happy, yet this changes as the trailer soon switches to a state of disruption. The variation in lighting also alerts us that this is a trailer as there is a distinct change from night and day throughout. Mise-en-scene has little effect as similar clothing is worn throughout although there is a constant change in setting that also shows that this is a trailer. Editing has also had an influence as fast cuts are used in the more disruptive parts of the trailer to create a sense of drama. As is evident with the trailer, this film is based on the horror genre. Mise-en-scene contributes largely to this as several times in the trailer, we see horror type characters e.g. in the pool, on the computer screen. The fast cuts created in editing also create a sense of fear and panic. The non-diegetic music also helps considerably with the horror genre as for example, sharp violins make the audience jump.

From this research, I have reached the conclusions that:

- trailers have a recognisable structure even though it is not the same as the structure of a film
- they begin relatively calmly, then switch to faster-paced shots and end with a cliffhanger / emotional moment
- they rely on non-diegetic sound to create pace and tension
- they establish the genre swiftly, mostly through mise-en-scene and action
