Initial Research Into Film Magazine Covers - Brendon

Empire June 2012

This cover has a very matte and single coloured background, which is unusual for magazine covers as they usually have a variation of colours or a fade or a textured cover whereas this one doesn’t. The main actor Daniel Craig is placed centrally on the cover with a picture of himself that is large enough to cover more or less the entire front cover from top to bottom leaving minor gaps on the sides for text to be present. The image of the actor is placed over the magazine title masthead “Empire” showing the importance of marketing the movie rather than the company. There is one smaller image on either side of the main image from other recent movies however there seems to be bullet holes placed right next to them insinuating that Bond may kill the competition. The issue date, number and price is in very small black text next to the title showing that it needs to be there but it really isn’t what the company wants to be marketing. The text centre of the magazine cover is all about the main image and the new Bond movie “Sky Fall” which is shown in bold and blocky white text with smaller additions such as the 50 years of Bond and new pictures from the movie being highlighted in red just above and below this title. At the lower end of the magazine cover we see pictures of the previous James Bond actors with their real names.

This issue is selling itself heavily on the popularity of Bond.Although othe filsm are advertised, this is in relatively small and unobtrusive text. The strength of the main image is being used as the main sell. The cover also appeals to the history of Bond and makes reference to the long history if the films, using this as another selling point.

Total Film February 2012

This cover contains a lot more text and a lot more images than the Empire June 2012 cover and it looks rather messy and less classy than its competitor. However, it still works. The main image is that of the hobbit with the title of the movie directly below: “The hobbit an unexpected journey,” and then some text which highlights the maker’s precious secrets. This is in rather small text and in white as opposed to a large text that is highlighted for such a caption. To the right of the main image we see a list of other films that have information or reviews inside. The magazine has its title at the top of the cover with large teasers like “Biggest preview ever” and also displays its award for the world’s best movie reviews on the magazine title itself. The top right hand corner of the magazine is dominated by this red corner and a picture of the Muppets just underneath, the red corner saying that the copy was guest edited by these famous puppets. At the bottom of the cover we see a framed box that includes stills from other movies and their titles over the stills, showing that information on these will be in this issue although they are not so prominent or important.

This cover works because the main image is so well lit and is eye-catching. It is also a cover that seems to promise lots of content in the magazine. I would imagine the producers felt that the main film might not have the same mass appeal as e.g. Bond and therefore needed to hedge their bets a little more on the cover.

Empire July 2012

This cover is simple yet effective due to the nature of the main image. The background is grey fading into blackness at the bottom of the cover fading into the main image. The main image is of the Batman in his black suit standing central of the cover. The bottom of the cover includes no writing and has no other pictures, it only includes a small white box containing the bar code in the bottom let hand corner of the cover. The top of the magazine cover includes a little more text, with the title of the magazine being evidently prominent yet the colour is black to fit in with the theme of the movie. Underneath the title there is a small slogan stating that this magazine is the world’s biggest movie magazine. Above the title there is one more piece of text showing that this Exclusive cover is 1 of a two part set to the #1 Batman covers from Empire. Underneath the title on the right in very small writing there is the date, price of the magazine and the magazine’s official website.

This is not a standard cover. It is a collector's edition and therefore does not contain many of the main features. I picked this because of what it says about the way the magazine company and the film company have to work together. Both need to sell their product. The magazine company will highlight a specific film if they are confident of its selling power and established audience, as is the case with Batman. They are more likely to pack the cover with other content if they are not so sure of the mass appeal of a film. In our case, as we are not making a film that is a part of an established franchise, I would expect quite a lot of other content on the cover featureing our film.
