Initial Research Into Film Posters - Brendon

Resident Evil – Retribution

In this poster we see a deserted battlefield which would once have been a thriving city along the banks of a calm river. The top half of the poster is virtually empty compared to the bottom half with the Umbrella Corporation’s helicopters firing missiles down on the land below.  The bottom half of the picture is largely dominated by the Umbrella Corporations Logo, which would instantly be recognisable to fans of the previous movies. The logo almost fades into the landscape but is prominent enough to be seen at a glance. The poster uses very dark colours, with mostly shades of grey, black and red with a few hints of orange and yellow for the explosions dotted around the picture. The choice of colours clearly reflects what the feel of the movie will be, showing a dark and violent approach to the poster. This makes the viewer interpret that this is how the movie itself will be. Fans of the series will already know that this movie is full of action and is very dark, and the name of the movie “Resident Evil” acts as anchorage, sparking the conclusion that the movie will be focused around action and hellish creatures/things.

There is little text on the poster itself which immediately suggests that this is a teaser poster, as there is no information other than the main actor and the movie franchise (Resident Evil). The name of this specific instalment of the movie (Retribution) has not been given to the viewers. The choice of putting the main character's name on the poster will alert people that this is a continuation to the previous movies and that the much loved character is still prominent. The rest of the texts state a short but effective tag line, being “EVIL GOES GLOBAL”, which sparks interest in the movie and shows how large a scale this movie really will be. There is no specific date on this poster showing that it is once again being released very early in the marketing campaign but is likely not to be the first poster as it does state a general time frame that the movie will be released, fall 2012.

One of the interesting things about this poster is that it does not feature any characters and relies almost entirely on the audience already knowing the franchise and that they will only be interested in whether this is going to live up to the previous films. Therefore the scale of destruction shown here and the use of the word global is telling fans that this film will be bigger and better, which is all they really want to know.

Men In Black 3

This Poster is very crowded. Although there is not much variety in objects there is the distinctive Men In Black 3 Logo (MIB3) in an almost tunnel shape behind the three figures in front. The 3 figures in front consist of the main actor throughout the two previous films and now in this one. We can assume this due to his central and in front position over the other two. The other two figures are placed either side of this main actor (Will Smith) and on the left side we have the younger version of the second actor who appears on the right. This is especially important as the movie is about going back in time and shows the two actors who the movie effectively revolves around and the two different ages of the actor, this being the agent/actor from the past-seen on the left, and the actor from the present seen on the right.

The poster consists of little text and is mainly focused on the pictures of the actors as well as the collage of Men In Black Logos in the background. Although there is minimal text we can tell that this poster was released much later on in the marketing campaign due to the fact it shows the film’s full title, “Men In Black 3 Back In Time”, and not just Men In Black 3. We can also deduce from this poster that it was released later on in the marketing campaign as it shows the movie will be released in 3D as well as standard but also states an exact screening release date, being 05.25.12.

This is another poster that relies on previous knowledge. It is simple but effective and is a good lesson in that you don't need to do too much with a poster. The main thing is that it gives the key information that an anticipated film is coming out. However, we need to bear in mind that our film doesn't belong to a well-known franchise so we might need to give away more and hint more at the narrative of our film.

Soldiers Of Fortune

This poster demonstrates a mix of a large image filled with the main characters in the peak of battle (although posing for the shot making the feel of being in battle a little comical) yet it is also composed of a lot of text including tag line, title, actors names and credits. The main image consists of 5 characters leading the viewer to assume that these will be the most important actors within the movie itself. The 5 gentlemen are all in DPMs and are fully equipped with battle gear and weapons which strongly indicate that this is an action movie revolving around some form of war. In the background we see shots of Apache helicopters in formation coming towards these 5 men. One of the Apaches seems to have been shot down as it is veering off to one side bellowing smoke as it goes, which once again reflects the action theme throughout this poster.

This poster includes a lot of text. At the top of the poster the viewer immediately sees the movie’s tag-line,  “To Stop The Worst, You Have To Send The Best”. This tag-line almost reflects how the actors are positioned in the image, which is all fully equipped and acting like the danger surrounding is normal, which leads the viewer to think that these are trained professionals. The next set of text shows who the main characters are played by, the actors’ names – however there seems only to be 4 actors names there when there are 5 actors in the picture above. Under the Lead actors names there is the title of the movie presented in bold font surrounded by some borders that almost represent a medal ribbon from the real army. Immediately underneath the title follow some very important text which consists of the credits from the makers, producers and some of the actors from the movie itself. All in all this poster contains a lot of information and would have been seen later in the marketing campaign although no release date is visible on the poster so it would have been closer to around the middle of the marketing campaign.

This is quite a traditional poster and is useful for us as it shows how to create an effective pster on a military theme. Grouping the key characters is important and they also need to be in uniform and carrying guns. For us the challenge will be not letting the military idea overwhelm the other side of the film, the emotional drama at home.

Comparing a teaser poser to a theatrical poster (The Dark Knight Rises – Batman)

There are two different types of posters that will be released during a marketing campaign; these are the Teaser posters and the Theatrical posters. A teaser poster will be released very early on in the marketing campaign and will be part of the first posters released to the public. Teaser posters will have little to no information on them and sometimes can just consist of a main image and a tagline for the film or the franchise name (this case being Batman and not the name of the specific segment). The reason that this happens is generally there is something that will be known about the film to the public, for example the Batman franchise has T.V shows, animations and comic strips among other forms of media, so if there was a teaser poster released then fans of the series would recognise its relevance and the hype would begin. A theatrical poster however will often contain a main image alongside the full title of the movie along with the actors’ names and the credits from the makers and producers. Another element the theatrical poster has that the teaser won’t is a specific date that the movie will be released to view.

The Dark Knight Rises Theatrical poster I have chosen shows an image of the two main characters, who fans of the series, will know as Bane and Batman. The two main characters seem to be in the middle of a battle, which the background reflects as there looks to be riots happening in the background. The poster contains the full title of the movie (The Dark Knight Rises) as well as the movie’s tagline (The Legend Ends) which is almost overpowered by the size and prominence of the release date (20th of July). The poster also shows that the movie will be shown in standard as well as IMAX and also presents a small amount of credits under all the main writing. This poster reveals the main actors and has quite a realistic look, unexpected for a film based on a comic book character, and therefore telling fans that this film will continure the dark feel of previous movies.

The Teaser Poster I have chosen displays an image of Batman’s mask broken and destroyed on the ground with a mysterious figure walking away from it, clenching his fists. The image is very dark which reflects the name of the movie, shown at the bottom of the poster (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES). The main image displayed is in a stormy place and only uses black and white which adds to the darkness of the image giving an over all eerie and evil effect. The teaser displays a vague time when the movie will be released, summer 2012, and it also includes that the movie will be shown in standard and IMAX. Behind the name of the movie there is a faded image of the logo known to be the logo of BATMAN in the past, a small image of a bat that has been associated with the movie since the series started. This is a classic tease because it implies through the tagline and the mask on the floor that Batman will be defeated this time. Of course nobody will believe this to be true but it sells the film on the idea of this being his toughest and most dangerous opponent to date.
