Genre- family/animation
My thoughts - for obvious reasons, I can easily come to the conclusion that this is of the animation/family type genre. Although certain characters e.g. sabre tooth tiger, are associated with being fierce, they are given a family friendly edge in the animation style and in the way they are drawn. The bright colours are also representative of the family genre. The names of the voice actors only have a small amount of space designated to them as when it comes to animation, the audience have less concern over who the actor is but care more about the animated character themselves. We can see a mammoth, a sloth, a squirrel, a badger and a sabre toothed tiger. Only one new character is introduced in this poster (the badger). The animals appear to be on a block of ice, riding a large wave which may have been caused by the new factor included in the storyline which is continental drift. This provides a hint as to what may be the basis for a story containing characters that are already familiar to many. There are also some possible improvements. They may be able to supply some greater hint to the storyline through using a more detailed image in a final poster.
Things to bear in mind for our work from this poster is how important the main image is. If that works, the rest of the poster will work. We need to think carefully what we want our main image to be and what we will be able to expect the audience to understand from it.

Sinister
My thoughts- this is a very effective poster in my opinion. The blood stained walls provide a quite horrific setting and the demonic face formed by the blood is also effective. The use of words at the top may also give the reader some idea as to what path the actual film may follow. The plain background that is the aged grey wall causes little distraction from the main demonic face and odd girl yet still has a ‘sinister’ effect due to the fact it is worn out and a horrid grey colour. The text at the top may draw in fans of films such as ‘Insidious’ and ‘Paranormal Activity’. The latter in particular is very well known, and this poster relies on calling to genre fans as well as potential new audiences. The credits at the bottom of the poster are given little space mainly due to the fact that many film watchers have little concern over who produced and directed the film etc, although this billing block must appear legally. Possible improvements that could have been made to the poster is the enlargement of certain text. In particular the text that states ‘Once you see him, nothing can save you’. This may be seen as quite a big hint to the storyline and therefore should be made more noticeable as posters are often seen in passing and at a distance. I'm a bit surprised that it is small here.
For our work, one thing I will take from this is that referring to previous films made by the same team is clearly considered a good ploy to attract audiences. On our poster, we will make sure we reference other films supposedly made by our production comapny / director. I am also noticing that text on the poster is secondary to the picture if it is not seen as a real draw to the audience. Only text that is considered to have real imapct is emphasised.

Batman, The Dark Knight Rises
Genre- action
My thoughts - this poster is very effective as it provides a graphic depiction of what type of fighting and action scenes may be included within the film. The dark grey colours are also representative of the modern change in films as recently motion pictures have become a lot darker and more sinister. The man on the right is the commonly known character ‘Batman’ wearing his distinctive mask, yet the man on the left may only be known by comic book fans. He is named ‘Bane’ and on first impressions our only presumption can be that he is a villain as the audience knows that Batman is known as a hero. However, the producers are probably aware that there are enough comic book fans to make his identity known very quickly across the internet and then into the wider public consciousness. In the background we can also see more people fighting. This may suggest that this film is on a much more epic and expansive scale than the other films and this may help draw in a larger audience. Also the title that is placed above the iconic Batman logo means that people instantly recognise what film this is and what it is about. Possible improvements that could be made is the greater amount of detail when it comes to characters like ‘Bane’ as little of them know who this villain is.
I think the level of realism of this is interesting. Both characters have comic book associations and yet there is nothing graphic novel style about this poster. Instead both characters are presented very much as 'real' people and there is a gritty feel in the slightly washed out colours. I also notice how the bat logo is incorporated into the title of the film as it effectively operated as a logo for the whole franchise and is instantly recognisable. This means the poster can be in any style and people will still know what it is advertising.
Genre- Comedy
My thoughts - personally I am a big fan of this film. When looking at the poster there are many different factors that may contribute to making it successful. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost worked together on the TV series ‘Spaced,’ this means that fans of the show may be keen to see this after seeing the poster. It is an obvious parody mainly due the title ‘Shaun of the Dead’ as oppose to ‘Dawn of the Dead’. Parody relies on genre knowledge – the producers have to rely on the audience knowing the original for them to be able to appreciate the parody. This again may draw in people keen on the comedy horror genre which is a growing market. Zombie fans may also be enticed due to the vast amounts of zombie characters that act as a kind of border for the poster. The review placed at the bottom of the poster is also effective as it puts the film in a good light for passers by. Possible improvements could maybe be the inclusion of more review as a small budget British film such as this may need some extra help to entice and draw in an audience. I also like the way the main characters are presented already in poster form and the zombies are attacking this. I think this is clever because it summarises the parody - the zombies are effectively shot and could look scary in another context but they are attacking a poster representation of the characters and not the characters themselves, so it is clear that this is not a film where any real violence happens.
